I would like to share with you what CCU means to me. Most
18 year old guys are usually thinking about cars, girls,
sports, anticipating college and being on their own. However,
it was different for me. I come from a broken home, a dysfunctional
family. Between my Mom & Dad I’ve been through
5 divorces, multiple broken engagements and live-ins.
As a young teen, I was introduced to
alcohol and drugs by a step-father. My drug habit led to
two DUIs, thus losing my drivers license, losing the quarterback
position and playing basketball for my high school.
I went on to get my High School Diploma
by graduating from an “alternative” school.
Shortly after graduation I was injured in an automobile
accident, ironically by a drunken driver. I spent many weeks
recovering from a broken back and neck. I did receive a
$90K settlement which I quickly blew over 1/3 on my habits/addictions.
At this point I came to the realization I had to do something
to better my life and remove myself from this environment.
An alumnus of CCU recommended I check
it out. Upon learning I could once again play basketball
I enrolled and started to school that spring with no financial
help or support from my family. Then during the following
semester Christmas break I found myself in the office of
the Executive VP confessing the drug paraphernalia discovered
in the dorm from a routine maintenance check was mine. I
was expecting expulsion. It was the rules. I told the VP
I was sorry and would get my things and leave. Instead I
experienced tough love and a second chance by agreeing to
a list of disciplinary actions and once again lost my place
on the basketball roster. I began to climb up the hill.
And
I began to experience something new- relationships –
with faculty, staff, and fellow students. I now had a family
and a feeling of love and support like never before. I came
to learn I have a heavenly father that does not leave me.
CCU has taught me morals, values, integrity,
hard work and leadership. I am currently a few hours from
finishing my degree in Elementary Education and want to
teach in this area in a place where I can mentor young kids
from broken homes. I am also the full time CCU Athletic
Director. On weekends I serve as the Junior High Youth Minister
at Erlanger Church of Christ.
In July 2003 I married a beautiful Christian
girl I met here, also a student. And she is currently finishing
her Masters Degree of Counseling from the Seminary.
And today I am the proud and humbled
father of a beautiful 8 month old son.
Things I never thought possible.
2007 Update
